Lesson 2: Principles of a PFA

Topic 2: General PFA Types

In this topic, you will learn about the three general types of PFA. These three types of PFA provide you with options that will inform the best way to apply a PFA program for a variety of circumstances and pests.

Objective:

  • Participants will be able to describe the three general PFA types.

As you have seen previously, an entire country could be declared and maintained as a PFA. However, this is not always necessary or even desirable if circumstances would require vast resources to carry it out. A variety of recognized methods and programs exist to take advantage of pest freedom on a smaller, more manageable scale.

There are three general types of PFA that can be used to fit a variety of circumstances. Click through the choices below to learn the IPPC definitions for these PFA types and see examples of each.

These are the three general types of PFA that can be created: an entire country, an area within a limited infested area, and an area within a highly infested area. Within these types, there are several programs that can be applied to achieve an official pest free area. We will illustrate these with real-world examples in the next lesson.
